Fun Pics

It was the evening of February 26, we were feeding dinner to the horses and stopped to watch the brood mares.  They were both showing signs that foaling was going to take place soon.  Tsatin was acting a little uncomfortable while eating but continued to eat.  I checked her, her birth canal was dark pink, we were going to have a baby.  We decided to go up to the house to eat dinner and check on the mares again after eating.  I grabbed the camera as we were going out the door.

We walked into Tsatin's stall, her vulva was completely relaxed.  Tsatin looked at us, her water broke and she proceeded to lay down with us in her stall with her.

It didn't take very long before we saw the vuvla bulging, then the sac appeared.

It seemed to take forever for the first hoof to appear even though it was only seconds.

Both legs were in good position and were soon followed by a nose.

Tsatin was straining to push the foal out so a little assistance with each contraction was given to guide the foal.  This should only be done by a knowledgeable person or with the guidance of the vet.

Soon the head was coming out, there is a little half moon on it's forehead.  The stallion only has a small star and his dam is a solid bay.  There was a little chrome on this little one.

The shoulders followed.

The foal was born within a matter of minutes, We cut the sac and dried the foal off only slightly so mom could lick him dry.

It wasn't long before Tsatin was talking to her newborn colt in soft nickers.

First touch by mom, soon she was licking her colt all over drying him off.  We let them have a bit of time together before beginning the imprinting process.

Our vet came out the next day and pronounced the colt healthy and mom in good shape.  Within a week Tsatin developed mastitis, the little guy worked very hard for every ounce of milk mom produced.  She was put on antibiotics and domperidone,  Within a week the mare was producing milk again.  This was great since the little guy was not very fond of the milk replacement nor the nurse mare.

Lore has grown into a good looking yearling.  This year he has begun showing in the yearling halter class.
